The Whoop Problem: When Your Body Becomes a Dashboard

The device knows how you slept. The question is whether you still do.

There is a growing population of people who wake up in the morning and check their wrist before they check how they feel. The two have become separate inquiries. Sometimes they conflict. When they do, the wrist usually wins.

This is what Whoop, the subscription-based fitness tracker, has quietly accomplished: it convinced a significant number of reasonably intelligent adults that the device's read on their body is more reliable than their own. The device gives you a Recovery Score — a number from 1 to 100 that tells you how prepared you are for strain. Green means go. Red means rest. The number is derived from heart rate variability, resting heart rate, and sleep performance metrics. It is, by any reasonable measure, an approximation.

You are treating it as a verdict.


The phenomenon has a clinical name in adjacent territory. Sleep researchers call it orthosomnia — anxiety about sleep quality caused by sleep tracking data, which produces worse sleep than the one the tracker reported. The term was coined in a 2017 paper published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine by Kelly Glazer Baron and colleagues at Rush University Medical Center. The mechanism is straightforward: tracking draws attention to a process that runs better without it. Intervention disrupts the thing it is meant to improve.

The Whoop version of this runs deeper because Whoop is not measuring one thing. It synthesizes multiple signals into a daily verdict on readiness. Some users follow it without question. Others argue with it. Both responses are forms of dependence.


What Whoop is actually selling is authority. Not data. Data is free — your phone can give you step counts and heart rate approximations without a monthly fee. What Whoop sells, at roughly $30 a month, is the feeling that your data means something. That a competent entity has processed the numbers and returned a trustworthy signal. The company's marketing leans into this: you are an athlete, your recovery is a resource, the device is your coach.

The problem is that a coach who watches you sleep and never speaks to you is not a coach. It is a surveillance apparatus with a recommendation engine. It tells you what the data says. It does not know what happened the night before — who you sat across from at dinner, what you said that mattered, or why you stayed out until 2am and would do it again without hesitation.

The device cannot value any of that. So it scores it as a red day. You start to feel vaguely guilty about a night that was, by most human standards, excellent.


Proprioception — the body's sense of its own position and state — is not a metaphor here. It is a literal neurological system, and it is trainable. People who develop close attention to physical sensation build fine-grained awareness of how they feel, what their body is doing, and what it needs. This is a skill. Like most skills, it atrophies when replaced by a prosthetic.

Outsourcing proprioception to a subscription service is the outsourcing of a human capacity to a product that profits from your continued reliance on it. This is not an accident of design. It is the design. A Whoop user who learns to trust their own body again is a churned subscriber.

There is no Recovery Score for the night you drove three hours to see a friend who needed you. The dashboard has no category for carrying someone else's grief. And the dashboard is becoming the frame through which people assess their own experience.


The body has always generated information. Hunger is information. Fatigue is information. The cortisol spike before something that matters is information. These signals are not always comfortable, and they are not always accurate, but they are yours — produced by a system that has spent decades learning your specific circumstances.

A wearable device has spent considerably less time on you. It has, however, spent considerable time on the aggregate data of millions of users who are not you. It is, at best, a useful outside perspective. It is not a superior one.

At some point, the sensor replaced the sensation.
