The Art of Sleeping Without Scoring It

Orthosomnia is clinical. So is the irony.
There is a condition, recognized in sleep medicine since 2017, called orthosomnia. It was documented by a team at Rush University Medical Center, including sleep researcher Kelly Baron, who noticed a pattern: patients were arriving in her clinic anxious, convinced they weren't sleeping well. The evidence was on their phones. Their sleep trackers said so.
The trackers were frequently wrong. Consumer sleep devices measure sleep stages through movement and heart rate — proxies, not direct neurological readings. A polysomnograph, the clinical gold standard, requires electrodes on the scalp. An Oura Ring does not have electrodes. It has a photoplethysmography sensor and an accelerometer, and it produces a Sleep Score, which is a number, and numbers feel authoritative even when they're wrong.
The orthosomnia patient doesn't wake up tired. They wake up, check their score, and become tired. The sequence matters. The score doesn't describe how they feel. It reassigns it.
This is the thing sleep trackers do that no other wellness technology quite replicates: they intervene in an experience that has no external verification. You cannot misidentify your hunger or your pain. But sleep happens in unconsciousness, which means the only data you had before devices was how you felt when you woke up. Which was, for most of human history, enough.
The Oura Ring launched its Sleep Score feature in 2018. Within a few years, it had become one of the primary reasons people bought the ring. A score. Seven categories — Total Sleep, Efficiency, Restfulness, REM Sleep, Deep Sleep, Sleep Latency, Sleep Timing — each given a number, combined into a final verdict. Green is good. Red is bad. The categories feel scientific because they use the vocabulary of polysomnography. They are not polysomnography. They are an approximation of polysomnography rendered as a product.
There is nothing inherently wrong with approximations. Medicine runs on them. The problem is that a clinical approximation, offered to a non-clinical population in the form of a daily score, teaches people to relate to sleep as a performance. And performance, famously, does not sleep well under pressure.
In sleep medicine this is called sleep effort — the paradox in which trying harder to sleep prevents sleep. It is well-documented. The worry about sleeplessness activates the sympathetic nervous system, which is specifically designed to prevent sleep. A person anxious about their REM sleep deficit is less likely to enter REM sleep. The app created the condition it was supposedly monitoring.
Baron's 2017 case studies described patients who began setting alarms to go to bed, avoiding social engagements that might affect their sleep timing, and structuring their entire evenings around achieving a good score. Some began taking supplements. Some began taking medications. All of them reported that their sleep felt worse since they started tracking it.
Sleep is the one domain where effort is almost entirely counterproductive. You cannot try your way into deep sleep. The brain enters it or doesn't, and the primary conditions for entry are approximately the same ones people had access to before Oura: darkness, a safe environment, a body that is not running from something. To this list, modern sleep science adds reasonable consistency of timing and temperature, neither of which requires a subscription.
The score doesn't give you this. It gives you a number, and then it gives you a comparison. And once you're comparing, you're competing, and once you're competing, you're not asleep.
There's a version of this where the technology is neutral and the problem is the user. That version doesn't hold. The product is sold on the promise that monitoring sleep improves it. The marketing is explicit. Oura calls its score an "overall picture of how your night was." Which means if the score is bad, your night was bad. Not: your score suggests your night was measurably suboptimal on certain proxied indicators. Your night was bad. The app has decided.
This is the trade you make when you hand over proprioception to a piece of software: you outsource the final word. The ring doesn't help you sleep. It helps you evaluate your sleep. And if the evaluation is hostile, that is now part of your morning.
You didn't sleep poorly. You slept fine. The app had standards.
